What is an Oral Health Therapist (OHT)?
An Oral Health Therapist (OHT) is an exciting and developing area in the dental profession. OHT’s are trained to provide both preventive and restorative dental care, with a strong emphasis on oral health promotion and education. Ideal for little and big smiles alike.
OHTs play a vital role in maintaining their patients’ oral health by performing:
- Comprehensive examinations and treatment planning
- Preventive treatments such as routine cleans and fluoride varnish
- Treatment of gum disease and non-surgical periodontal therapy (gum disease management)
- Simple restorative procedures such as fillings.
- Paediatric dentistry (cleans, fillings and extractions)
Patient education is a key aspect of a OHT’s role in the dental team – by promoting good oral hygiene habits and encouraging early intervention, OHTs help prevent dental diseases and support overall well-being. Really getting into the nitty gritty of what is best for you, your health and your lifestyle. This preventive approach reduces the need for complex treatments in the future and promotes lifelong oral health.
While OHTs are trained to perform a wide range of dental treatments, they work collaboratively with dentists, referring complex cases for specialised management when needed. This team-based approach ensures patients receive timely, high-quality care tailored to their individual needs.

How Do OHTs Differ from Dentists?
Oral Health Therapists specialise in preventive care and basic restorative treatments, focusing on regular check-ups, professional cleans, small fillings and gum health maintenance to prevent dental issues before they become serious. Dentists, on the other hand, are qualified to treat more complex conditions, including procedures such as root canals, extractions, and advanced restorative work.
Together, OHTs and dentists create a comprehensive and accessible dental care experience, ensuring patients receive the best possible treatment for their oral health needs.
