Frequently Asked Questions
How much will my appointment cost?
Costs vary depending on the type of appointment and any treatment you may need. We will explain our fees and provide an estimate before starting treatment wherever possible, so there are no surprises. Please call our friendly team if you have any questions.
How often should I see a dentist?
For many people, a check-up every 6 months is appropriate, but everyone is different. We will recommend a schedule based on your teeth, gums, medical history and risk of dental problems.
I am nervous about visiting the dentist. Can you help?
Absolutely! We are a small, family-owned practice and we take the time to listen without judgement. You can advise us of your concerns so we can move at your pace, explain each step, agree on a stop signal and begin with a simple conversation or gentle examination if that feels more comfortable. Where appropriate, we can use a topical anaesthetic to numb the gum before an injection, helping to make the experience more comfortable. We also offer nitrous oxide, commonly known as happy gas, for suitable patients who may benefit from feeling calmer and more relaxed during treatment. Your dentist will discuss these options with you and confirm what is appropriate for your individual needs.
Do you have emergency appointments?
We do our best to see patients with urgent dental problems as soon as possible. Call us early and describe your symptoms so our team can assess how urgently you need care. Availability can vary each day. If out of hours, leave us a voicemail so we can address it asap.
Will I have to pay a gap on my treatment?
Your out-of-pocket cost depends on your health fund, level of cover, annual limits and the treatment provided. Following a consultation, we will provide you with a treatment plan for you to then confirm with your fund on your benefits. I you attend in person with a valid heath fund card the reception team can run a quote for you with your health to find out what benefit they will pay.
Do you accept all health funds?
Patients from all health funds are welcome. Rebates will vary between funds and policies, so please bring your current health fund card and check with your insurer if you need confirmation of your cover prior to your appointment.
Will my appointment hurt?
Your comfort is very important to us. We use gentle techniques and local anaesthetic when necessary and explain what you may feel and check in with you throughout. You can ask us to pause at any time. Some tenderness after certain treatments is common, and we will explain what to expect and how to manage it.
Do you offer payment plans?
We offer Afterpay as a payment option. We have chosen not to offer other payment plans as finance providers charge high interest rates on repayments. Our team will explain your treatment and fees clearly and offer quotes before you proceed, and you are welcome to ask us about whether treatment can be staged where clinically appropriate.
Why do I need X-rays? Is the radiation necessary?
Dental X-rays can reveal problems that are not visible during an examination, such as decay between teeth, infection or bone changes and are strongly recommended. We take routine x-rays every two years, as advised by ADA guidelines. Dental x-rays carry one of the lowest doses of radiation for medical x-rays, with a dose being comparable to that which is received during a short haul flight. However, please tell us if you are or may be pregnant we will postpone any x-rays till after your baby is born.
Do I need fluoride?
Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and helps protect teeth from cavities, so we generally advise all our patients to use a fluoride toothpaste. However, we appreciate people can have their own preferences on their exposure to fluoride, and we are happy to respect and advise you on alternative products. We recommend that all patients brush twice a day with toothpaste best suited for their age bracket.
Do I need to floss my teeth?
Cleaning between your teeth each day helps remove plaque that a toothbrush cannot reach. Floss is one option or interdental brushes may suit you better. It’s your best chance in preventing cavities between your teeth and preventing gum disease which can lead to tooth loss. We can show you the best technique for your teeth and gums.
When should my child start seeing the dentist?
We recommend a first dental visit when they have their full set on baby teeth, from ages 2-3. Early and relaxed visits help children become familiar with the practice and allow us to offer preventive advice before problems develop. If you wish to get your baby used to the dental environment please bring them along to your routine check-up appointments, where we can offer quick advice and a fun ride in the chair!
What should I do if I have a toothache?
Contact us as soon as you can so we can assess the cause and book you our earliest available appointment. A toothache that does not improve with pain relief, is waking you up at night, comes with a bad taste, pain when biting, hot and cold sensitive, or facial swelling needs prompt dental attention.
Are you a paediatric dental specialist?
We are a family dental practice rather than a specialist paediatric practice. We welcome children and adults, and focus on calm, positive visits. If your child needs specialist care, we will explain why and help arrange an appropriate referral.
Do you offer happy gas?
Yes, we offer nitrous oxide, commonly known as happy gas, to help patients, if needed, feel calmer and more relaxed during treatment. You will remain awake and able to communicate with us throughout your appointment. Before treatment, your dentist will gently talk you through the process and check your health and individual needs to make sure it is appropriate for you.
Is the practice wheelchair accessible?
Our practice is on ground level and accessible from the street. Please contact our team before your visit so we can discuss any support you may need. We will do our best to make your visit comfortable and straightforward.
